Robin's Backyard Favorites

Notes by Robin Edwards

People often ask me what my favorite plants are. I am not good at choosing favorites because there are way too many choices!

I have loved peonies ever since we inherited them when we bought our house twenty-two years ago. They have served me well over the years, as cut flowers in my home and gifts for teachers and friends arranged thoughtfully in sweet blue vases and jars.

I sprinkle zinnias everywhere, because well, why not?!

Each bloom lasts a long time and they make wonderful cut flowers.

And there are so many varieties, you can’t go wrong!

I adore Black-eyed Susans (Rudbekia) that start to bloom in late summer and last right up until frost.

Goldsturm is so hardy and easy and Denver Daisy is a blast of color with hometown pride.

I’ve also come to appreciate foliage plants (thanks to Ginny and Cassy). Purple fountain grass is stunning all summer long–you can’t miss.

Plant it by itself or as a blast of dark color and texture in an arrangement. It ends up as a great Halloween accent on my front porch.

Here it is as a lovely accent with my Black-eyed Susan.

Of course there’s always the classic shade perennial foliage options like hostas and coral bells. Ligularia is a great choice too with a Black-eyed Susan type bloom.

Ask me tomorrow and my list will be completely different. As long as you know your space and the amount of light it gets, you’ll be able to make the right choice for your backyard.

It’s safe to say that I love all kinds of plants and I am thankful to be able to change my mind so much at work at my favorite nursery. ♥
